6 Best Ways to Gain Space in Your Windows PC

How many times have we been forced to sort through our photos, videos and other games in order to free up a few gigabytes on our hard drive? Countless, of course. Whether you installed Windows several years ago or just a few weeks ago, your computer’s breathing system may have become clogged. No wonder.

The repeated installation of software or add-ons, a few crashes in succession make the computer feel like it has swallowed a whole bunch of junk.

Therefore, it is essential to have a minimum of free space on the hard disk for optimal performance. If you don’t know where to start, here are 6 best ways to gain space.

Best Ways to Gain Space in Your Windows PC

Over time, files and folders accumulate and the disk that was thought to be more than adequate to hold all this data is now cramped. Before you buy a new disk, which is still an expensive solution, there are several ways to save several gigabytes on your disk. Here are our tips for a digital sweep.

Empty Recycle BinĀ

It may seem obvious, but it is sometimes forgotten! When you delete files in Windows, they are usually moved to a specific folder in the system: the Recycle Bin. You should therefore empty it regularly. To do this, right-click on the icon on the Desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin from the context menu.

Effectively Remove duplicates

To erase files that appear in duplicate or triplicate on your hard drive, you can use a similar photo finder and remover program. This kind of tool allows you to search for all duplicates on your PC or those stored on a disk. It also allows you to protect Windows system files to avoid manipulation errors, or display thumbnails of the found duplicate photos.

Additionally, you have the option to move duplicates to another hard drive, rather than delete them completely. As a result, you can keep a backup of the found duplicates.

Delete junk and temporary files

Unnecessary or temporary system files are an obvious target. You may not be aware of it, but when a Windows computer updates, it retains much of the data from the installation. And this data is not of much use, but continues to take up space.

And while the Windows Cleanup Tool does a good job, it doesn’t remove everything. It doesn’t know how to delete temporary files from third-party applications like Google Chrome or Firefox, which can take up several gigabytes of disk space. Therefore, it is recommended to get a good disk cleaning tool.

Eliminate the heaviest applications

If you install a lot of applications and software, the storage space on your computer can quickly melt like snow in the sun. Some applications are more storage intensive than others, so eventually, you need to uninstall the ones you don’t use anymore.

Reduce or disable Windows restore space

The Windows Restore function allows you to return to a stable state of the system, before a software installation or update. In case of a problem, it is easy to undo the changes by returning to a previous restore point.

By default, in Windows, system restore is enabled on disk C: and limited to 10 GB. It is possible to enlarge or reduce this space to store more or less restore points. Although it is not recommended, it is possible to disable System Restore completely to save disk space.

  • Open start menu,
  • Search for Create Restore Point,
  • Select a disk on which restoration is enabled,
  • Click on configure,

You will have access to additional options. This is where you can completely disable restoration for the disk, modulate the disk space allocated to restore points and delete existing points.

Check for viruses or spyware

If you notice a strong slowdown of Windows or your Internet browsing, or a strange behavior of your machine, perhaps it is infected. Some malicious programs can pass through an antivirus: spyware, fake software or antivirus, Trojans or viruses. Download a good Anti-Malware and install it, it will help you to make your computer’s performance much smoother.
